Over the last couple of years I've been involved in community based singing groups. Current research now supports that singing is good for health. It can also be a great way of getting to know people. It seems that this message is catching on and a number of singing groups are springing up. If you get a chance, give it a go. Even if you think you can't sing, the chances are you can and you'd be surprised by the blissful sound a group can achieve.
I've long been interested in the interface between the arts and health and, earlier this year, I became aware of the some innovative community based arts activities run by New Horizons - a joint venture involving academics at Christchurch University in Kent and the Royal Society of Public Health (UK). New Horizons have developed training programmes and offer workshops and conferences on a range of issues concerning innovative practises in the arts, health and well being.
New Horizons will be hosting 6 all day workshops from September 2013 to April 2014 to be held in London. The subjects being covered are diverse and range from singing and health to developing arts and health programmes in hospitals.
