A particularly glorious location is the Isle of Mull. I've recently written about the Mendelssohn on Mull festival. However, in between the concerts, I just get around and visit the island as there are some stunning locations.
The most convenient way to get about is by car. However, there is a limited bus service, which is linked in with the CalMac ferry times. Alternatively, some like to cycle round, as the main roads are good and pass through lower terrain. Also, with such splendid scenery around, how's about taking to the road on foot!
After a walk you'll be ready to eat and on Mull you'll find some good restaurants. Because of it's location the island does seafood really well. A real gem of a find is the Boathouse on Ulva, which is a short hop from Mull by ferry and is a real must if you're visiting the island.
Ulva is a privately owned island with a thriving population of approximately 16 people who are involved in traditional sheep and cattle farming, fish farming, oyster farming and tourism. There are no tarmac roads on Ulva, so the main form of transport is by quad bike; used by all inhabitants, young and old! However, be warned, it's very boggy! So wear either boots or wellies.
The ferry stops right outside The Boathouse, which specialises in serving local produce and was awarded the 2009 "local food hero" award. The fish is landed by the family boat. The oysters are homegrown and the shellfish is creel caught. The home-made baking uses free range eggs and all teas, coffees and chocolate are Fairtrade. There are seats outside where you can enjoy a massive seafood platter, whilst taking in the most awesome mountain views. A real treat that you just want to go on for ever. Bon Appetit!
